MAIN DRIVESHAFT – COMMON PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS

UNIVERSAL JOINT ISSUES

Inadequate or incorrect lubrication as well as excessive angles or torque loads can lead to conditions such as:

  • Seizure
  • Burned cross ends
  • ‘Spalling’ on bearing surface
  • ‘Brinelling’ – grooves in surface

UNIVERSAL JOINT SOLUTIONS

The Turret Technology team will assess UJ condition and replace as required to maintain optimal performance.

This service includes:

  • Following correct UJ assembly/fitting procedures
  • Fully lubricating greasable joints with premium grade lubricant or upgrading to ‘lube-for-life’ maintenance-free UJ type
  • Checking yoke condition/tolerances for wear or misalignment

CENTRE BEARING & MIDSHIP ISSUES

This is a ‘hotspot’ area to inspect & maintain at regular intervals as lack of lubrication or other factors can lead to:

  • Seized or rough running bearings
  • Rubber inserts – split, damaged or perished
  • Hanger bracket – bent, damaged or fractures
  • Looseness /clearance in midship assembly / retainer causing  vibration

CENTRE BEARING & MIDSHIP SOLUTIONS

The Turret Technology team when working on this section of your shaft will:

  • Follow correct assembly procedures for these parts
  • Assess bearing, rubber insert & bracket condition and replace as required. Fully lubricate greasable bearings. Slotted rubber insert types are often upgraded to solid rubber to provide better long term performance
  • (Selected Volvo truck models only) – Recommend upgrading older ‘2-bolt’ midship designs to a large single nut type with longer spline length, overcoming looseness and vibration issues

SLIP SPLINE ISSUES

This sliding spline section will need replacement if:

  • Longitudinal or radial clearance becomes excessive – often causing vibration
  • Damage to the seal can also allow debris to work its way into the splines which can cause binding or seizure. This can also lead to ‘brinelling’ of the universal joints

TUBING

Needs to be checked over for:

  • Any dents, bends or even missing balance weights.
  • Any damage or distortion in the tube section will contribute to imbalance & vibration.
  • Welding at tube ends also needs thorough inspection for fractures or separation caused by shock loads or vibration.

Turret Technology will straighten or replace this as required with special grade driveline tubing. This section can also be lengthened or shortened to suit modifications.

INTERAXLE SHAFTS – COMMON PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS
Typical Interaxle shaft repair sample: Wear in yoke eyes, u-joint failure, clearance in slip section causing vibrations

YOKES

Yokes can become bent, damaged or even fractured as a result of excessive torque or shock loads. Wear in the yoke eyes can cause universal joint caps to rotate leading to premature failure.

The Turret Technology team will replace yokes that show up unacceptable for optimal operating performance.
